04 / MEMBERSHIP

Membership is a way to participate.

At OBS, membership starts with showing up, building things, sharing knowledge and helping the space grow.

COMMUNITY MEMBERSHIP

Come as you are. Contribute as you can.

Our community membership categories describe how people participate in the hackerspace. They are not ranks, and they are not corporate membership classes.

ONE PERSON CAN FIT MORE THAN ONE CATEGORY.

You might regularly attend events, volunteer your skills and also support the space with equipment. Participation can change over time.

01 / PARTICIPATE

General Member

Regularly participates in meetups, projects, discussions and activities and helps shape the community.

02 / CONTRIBUTE

Contributing Member

Contributes time, skills, knowledge or effort through volunteering, mentoring, workshops, documentation, maintenance, working groups or community projects.

03 / SUPPORT

Supporting Member

Contributes resources such as financial support, equipment, tools, materials, services, sponsorship or infrastructure.

Core Membership

Core Members are members of the incorporated organisation under the OBS Constitution and applicable law. Core Membership is separate from community participation and is not automatic when someone joins or attends the hackerspace.

COMMUNITY MEMBERSHIP ≠ CORPORATE MEMBERSHIP

The Community Handbook explains participation in the space. The Constitution governs Core Members, the Board and the legal entity.

Visitors are welcome

You do not need to be a member to attend a public meetup, workshop or event. Visitors are expected to respect the people, equipment, safety requirements and culture of the space.

What membership looks like in practice

  • Show up to events and meet other builders.
  • Bring a project, question, idea or skill.
  • Join or start a working group.
  • Help welcome newcomers and document what you learn.
  • Take care of shared tools, equipment and the space.
  • Help organise activities or support community projects.
